Jo-Ann Haughton works as a product manager for Boots in their Nottingham head office. In her spare time, she is also a fitness instructor at the FITC-owned Portland Centre, located within the local Meadows community. She is hugely enthusiastic about fitness, as well as fundraising for causes she is passionate about.
When we spoke to Jo-ann, it was obvious she is a very shy, caring and softly-spoken lady who doesn’t enjoy the limelight, or being the centre of attention. For Jo-ann, it’s not about the glory or publicity, she fundraises to help others less fortunate than herself. Growing up in the Meadows area it is a community very close to her heart. It’s where she learnt to swim as a child and trained in the gym during her mid-twenties, before moving away. After recently passing her qualification as a fitness instructor in May, she was keen to start teaching classes such as aerobics and cardio-combat, but found the centre did not own the barbells needed to teach these classes.
Jo-ann took it upon herself to fundraise in order to generate funds enabling her to buy the barbells she needed to teach her classes. She did so very successfully raising £500 for the equipment, which now sits proudly in the Portland Centre gym. To raise these funds, Jo-ann organised and led boot-camps at her workplace Boots to keep her colleagues fit and active during their busy day. Jo-ann told us her motive for fundraising was “to give back to a place (Portland Centre and the Meadows) that helped me on my journey to where I am today.” The inspirational Jo-ann is now currently fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK too. Her fundraising total is now approaching a fantastic £1,000.
FITC staff at the Portland Centre wish to extend their thanks to Jo-ann for her ongoing support and wish her all the best with her future fundraising and fitness classes.
