Notts County FITC to Raise Awareness for Mental Health with Sponsored Walk Event

On Sunday 27th May, a group of Notts County Football in the Community staff, supporters and participants will be taking part in the Walking Out of Darkness sponsored walk to raise awareness of FITC’s Mental Health projects.

The Walking out of Darkness initiative is a national Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention event, which is designed to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health illnesses with the aim to create zero suicide local communities across the country.

From May to October, seven major cities, including London, Birmingham, Bristol and Nottingham, will be taking part in the event.

The walk is an enjoyable 10-mile-route through each city. In Nottingham, people are invited to walk by the Embankment and enjoy pleasant atmosphere with friends, family or work colleagues whilst supporting the work of local organisations which are helping people suffering with mental health issues.

It is hoped the event will raise vital funds and awareness of FITC’s mental health projects as well as help reduce stigma surrounding mental illness.

Taking part in the walk will be local singer/songwriter, Rob Green. He said: “I’m delighted to be taking part in the Walking out of Darkness sponsored walk as part of Notts County Football in the Community team.

“The work FITC is doing within the Nottingham community is incredibly impactful and further highlights the importance of maintaining our emotional wellbeing. FITC has managed to bridge the gap between our physical and mental health and it is inspiring to be working with them to raise mental health awareness.”

Ian Richardson, FITC’s Activity Manager and mental health lead, said: “Our emotional health and wellbeing programmes have already supported hundreds of people from all age groups over the last 11 years.

“We have helped them face their issues head on, supporting them to overcome a range of problems, this in turn has improved people’s emotional health and wellbeing leading to them living a more fulfilled life. The Walking Out of Darkness event will help raise awareness of mental health but also the range of work that we do.”
